You didn't mention much about the mother's labor. I usually see odd suckling
patterns in newborns(up to day 5 or so) that my partner and I have
affectionatly nicknamed: newborn junk. We comonly see clamping and flutter in
the babies who have been subjected to a prolonged 2nd phase, hard labor, lots
of molding and/or forceps. Anything that puts excessive pressure on the head.

The gaggy, mucousy type baby seems to feed poorly until they clear the mucous
by spitting it up (or in some cases or peds us gastric lavage). Once the
stomach is clear they seem to nurse avidly.
I hesitate to intervene too vigorously with healthy babies 1-3 days old. With
patience they seem to snap out of it on their own.
