Just adding my personal experience to this. Both my mother and I start our
periods late (at 16) - she had one child and only nursed for 4 months (not
enough milk she was told was the reason for my slow weight gain, which
strangely didn't improve on formula). I had 4 children and nursed a total
of about 12 years (one of them tandem). Had about a year of no periods
after my last 3 births. We both went through early menopause. Both started
hot flashes, etc in our mid 30's, but strangly now at 41 I am still having
periods - my mother was completely done by 38. So if extended nursing
causes this why did my mother end years before me? It should be flipped.

She may be in a long peri-menopause, or something else is up. I also seem
to have no fertility left - we haven't even thought of birth control for
about 4 years and are no way close to abstaining! :-) (the statistic about
couples sexual frequency linked to child's ages).

A bit personal!
