WBW Action Kit

The theme of the World Breastfeeding Week this year, " Breastfeeding:
Nature's Way", involves aspects which are not discussed on a daily basis by
the defenders of breastfeeding, thus bringing a new approach to this
question. With this in mind, the international coordination for the WBW had
the idea of bringing together people who are involved with the theme and
those who are willing to reflect on the proposals for disseminating
materials for the WBW `97.

With the support of the British Council, Unicef Brazil, Unicef UK, Varig
and SCIAF, the WBW Planning Workshop - Action Kit was held, from February
22nd to the 24th, in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.

This workshop counted on the participation of: Andrew Radford (author of
the document "Ecological impact of bottle feeding" and coordinator of the
Children's Friend Hospital Initiative in England), Denise Arcoverde
(international coordinator for the WBW), Antonieta Hernandez (member of the
WABA Steering Committee, coordinator of the IBFAN Latin America and the
Venezuelan national breastfeeding program), Cecília Muxi (representative
for the WABA and IBFAN in Uruguay), Lígia Duarte (representative for the
Origem Group, IBFAN Recife and coordinator of the WBW Brazil) and Marcus
Renato de Carvalho (IBFAN Rio).

This proposal for WBW '97 material is based on the items which were
discussed by this team.

In this meeting the importance of the production and distribution of
material with the greatest urgency was discussed, since the delay in
receiving and the lack of information has been the greatest difficulty
encountered by organizations, throughout the world, for the commemoration
of the World Breastfeeding Week.

The idea to hold workshops to evaluate and produce divulging material for
the WBW should be maintained. This work should be done the year prior to
the campaign, so that the divulging material can be ready and begin to be
distributed in the beginning of each year.

These materials - action folder, poster, booklets, pamphlets, software -
are being developed and/or proposed by the International WBW Coordination,
together with the WABA Secretariat and revised by members of the WABA
Assembly and will be available before the end of March.
