Instead of "how soon can I give formula?' why not "how long is it safe to
wait before exposing the baby to formula?" Try looking at this the other
way around. I know the different book authors and people on Lactnet have
written about how long it is safe to wait for baby to get the idea. Years
ago, as hosp LC, I used to get moms to pump a tad bit of colostrum and put
it in a nipple and let baby suck it up. It was like -Wow this is what I'm
supposed to do and they'd go to the breast. You could use an eyedropper or
syringe or cop if you don't want to use a nipple. But you may not get much,
I remember sometimes it was literally half the nipple full. This was when I
started referring to colostrum as liquid gold to get the moms impressed with
every drop they got! Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
