I recently participated in a March of Dimes fun(d)raising event called
Men In Labor. Basically we solicited men in the community to collect
500.00 to go towards prenatal care for the March of Dimes, then we had
delivery day, the men came in and brought their money, we gave them a
belly and a special t shirt that they got to keep , put them in a wheel
chair and off the the labor/delivery room to deliver their baby.... we
had baby dolls hiding under a sheet in the bucket under the delivery
bed, the men got into the labor bed, feet in stirrups and slid down to
the edge , another nurse and I were the labor nurses for this dozen or
so men, and we had a great time!
The men gained a new perspective on how a woman feels in such a
position, the closer they were to the goal of 500.00 the easier labor
and delivery they got, and of course, all of them breastfed! This was
all done with the local TV channel there filming it all. The two most
memorable births were of the CEO of the hospital and one of the OB
doctors that I work with. The CEO was definitely not prepared for the
vulnerability he felt in such a position, and no less, he underwent a TV
interview in the postpone while breastfeeding. The local TV is running
an ad for the show that says something about CEO of the hospital
breastfeeding, what a great awareness raiser.
The OB doc that was in labor was so funny, he came in screaming give me
drugs give me drugs, I want an epidural.... really played up the role,
when he felt like pushing we (labor nurses) told him that his doctor was
out and would be a while getting there.... The lady doing the interview
questioned him about how he felt about the process, he said he learned
to listen to the nurses more! ;--))

The whole event was a blast and we raised a lot of money. We had lunch
and prizes donated for all!

Just wanted to share this positive event!
