It was really good to see friends at the recent ILCA meeting. I think what
struck me so profoundly was how far we've come, and the extent to which our
mutual passion for breastfeeding has taken us into all sorts of avenues I
know I never thought possible 15 years ago. There were so many people who I
know from our roots in La Leche League and Nursing Mothers Council, and from
the professions of nursing and medicine and pharmacy who are published
authors, developers of high quality educational materials, course directors,
publishers, inventors, international authorities, and world class advocates
involved in liaison with the powers that be on behalf of mothers and babies.
It was awesome to see the exhibit hall full of people who saw a need for
teaching materials and went out and filled it themselves. It was awesome to
see on the speaker's podiums men and women who didn't wait for someone else
to do the job, start the milk bank, create the organization, collect the
research, or write the article: They saw the need and did the work. I was
proud and grateful to be associated with such a clever and compassionate
bunch.
