There are also the oral motor benefits of breastfeeding that are lost
when moms exclusively pump, and perhaps some of the synchronization
between baby's needs and mom's milk composition that is postulated to
happen through saliva transfer. When moms in my practice exclusively
pump, I encourage them to let the baby lick their nipple at least once a
day. Sometimes this has led to the baby self attaching, and mom
deciding that breastfeeding is better than EPing for her.

For moms who have been sexually abused, direct breastfeeding can be
healing, as a way of taking back her body and reaffirming it's
biological purpose.

Most of all, EPing is double the work! I have had some brave moms who
did it for a year or two when their babies were unable to latch, but
most find it hard to sustain.
