Before I tried elemental formula with a fussy, bloody-stooled baby, I'd try adding lactase to expressed milk. The caplets crush instantly with the back of a spoon. I'd add a whole caplet to each pumped feeding, let it stand for several hours or refrigerate overnight, and see what happens. Sure, it's invasive, but nowhere near as invasive as switching to formula.

Something that I don't know of anyone having tried is having the *mother* drink the formula! I think this may have been Linda Pohl's idea. It tastes wretched, and it would be expensive, but wouldn't it be *interesting* to see if a few days of mom receiving nothing that we weren't prepared to give the baby, preferably treating her milk with lactase at the same time, made a difference?

If having the mother on the formula (and removing lactase) wouldn't we know for sure that giving the formula directly to the baby wouldn't help? I wouldn't think it'd take more than a few days to notice the beginnings of improvement, if improvement were going to occur.

I sure am curious to know if this has ever been tried...
