Another reason could be allergies.  My middle son was a problem to get latched on the first few days after birth because of his tongue sucking (it was loud).  I do remember another older, more experienced leader talking about tongue walking helping these babies and that is what I used.  Then we discovered he had horrible milk/dairy allergies and I went completely dairy free.  Strangely this pregnancy the last few weeks I was craving chocolate/dairy so he got a good dose of dairy at the end of the pregnancy and looking back we figured that may have been part of the tongue sucking.  Since some people with allergies feel that the palate is itchy and try to scratch it with their tongue, by sucking his tongue he could rub his palate.

Hope that helps.  We figured out the allergies from his other symptoms since we finally got him to stop sucking his tongue.
