Wonderful post! My husband is a gastroenterologist and covered for one of
his partners who had twins a couple of years ago. There was a lot of
resentment from the group when she was put on bed rest for the last few
weeks, then took time off for the first three months, and came back to work
part time for the first year while her husband stayed home with the babies.
I remember a friend of ours (husband and wife both doctors) who unexpectedly
became pregnant during her residency. She was allowed TWO WEEKS off and then
expected to come back, or lose her position in the program.
I know there can be a lot of defensiveness in women doctors about their
choice to formula feed, but for many of them they really felt like they
didn't have a choice. I give a lot of credit to these women who have to be
able to work 60 hrs/week and still breastfeed.
