Lynn,
The first thing that struck me at this web site is the banner--"VIACORD:
Bank on us for life". What do biotechnologist do with cordblood? Hm...patent
cell lines, etc. What is going on with human milk? Patenting. While I
recognize that cord blood may save lives,(so does human milk) part of the deal is the
harvesting of cells that might have pharmaceutical use. Obviously a website
that supports the use of body tissues and fluid for research. For me this sets
up a few bells and whistles of concern.

Second, the sponsors of this website are who?????? Infant formula companies.
So should we be shocked by this mother's story? Who even know's if it's real
or if it's real how much money is she getting for telling it?

Thirdly, The letter written to this researcher.......hm....... I found Dr.
Peter Willatts mentioned at the following website. I suspect that if he was in
Kuala Lumpur, Malasia doing this talk for Wyeth, that he might be paid by
Wyeth. The research that has been done on DHA and AA that supports its usage is
mostly backed by the infant formula industry and Martek or the US government.
Any independent evaluation/studies that suggest a problem are not media news
(because who owns the media?)

The whole website looks bogus to me, just a front for the infant formula
industry. The real issue about these oils is the fact that they are "NOVEL
INGREDIENTS." The fact that we cannot call a spade a spade in this country is a
significant sign that intellectual freedom is on rocky territory. These oils are
not cold pressed from the ocean or some mushroom field. Human being have
never before this time eaten this kind of food. There seems to be no
understanding of the precautionary principles that are so very important when dealing with
new organisms for use in our food system. To use new kinds of foods on
infants is certainly a receipe for disaster.

"These LCPs can be found in food such as eggs, fish and green vegetables.
However, for an infant, the only source of this nutrient is mother’s milk or milk
formulated with LCPs,” Willets, a mental health expert, said during a Wyeth
Nutritional Update talk titled AA and DHA – Implications on Mental Development
in KL recently."
