Australian Lactnetters might be interested in the comments of this year's
Australian of the year. I found it significant that the health problems that
she listed are ones in which not breastfeeding can play a role. I wonder
whether she is supportive of breastfeeding?

Australian of the Year warns of looming health crisis

LINDA MOTTRAM: The scientist named as Australian of the Year is warning this
morning of a crisis in the health of Australia's young people.

Professor Fiona Stanley, renowned specialist pediatric epidemiologist, says
that a social crisis looms, if there is not action to tackle children's
health and behavioural problems.

Our reporter Hamish Fitzsimmons has been speaking to Professor Stanley.

PROFESSOR FIONA STANLEY: Our research and our data are showing over the last
two or three decades that almost every single indicator that we have of
child health, developmental problems, wellbeing of children, is actually
getting worse. And these aren't just things that, you know, kids will grow
out of or something like that.

HAMISH FITZSIMMONS: What sort of problems are there though, specifically?

PROFESSOR FIONA STANLEY: Well, specifically, the specific things I'm talking
about are a whole lot of what we call complex diseases, I mean things like
asthma, type one diabetes, autism, bowel disorders in children, when which
there's obviously some kind of genetic pre-disposition, but also quite
considerable environmental interactions with that risk.
