It is possible that for some infants untreated tongue-tie and difficulty  
breastfeeeding leading to failure to thrive could unfortunately lead to  
death.  This may well have occurred when bottle feeding or alternative  healthy 
foods were unavailable, or a lack of surrogate breastfeeder with more  
compatible anatomy.  Throughout history there is evidence or supposed  
implication that frenulums were divided, thus passed on through  generations.
