Exactly Valerie. I am still stunned that people allowed MJ to use a small
study of 56 kids to support their adding of DHA and ARA. How that study
changed their whole line of formula. Remember that there were 4 other larger
studies that found no increase in mental development. Remember years ago
when LCs said that studies "SEEM to POINT to the fact that human milk
increases mental development and visual acuity". Then the formula companies
started to add DHA and ARA and ONLY then did I hear LCs confidently say yes
human milk can increase your IQ.

It is the same trend here with heart disease. Huge studies are there to
support the statement that breastfed children later in life will have lower
incidence of heart disease and obesity and diabetes. Will it take the
formula companies to add in certain ingredients and get a study to support
that before WE as LCs support the value of human milk against those 3 big
killers!!! Mary Ann RN, IBCLC in central WI

Just thought this patent application interesting particularly since the role
of breastfeeding in preventing cardiovascular disease is still considered
questionable. This patent application is called "Lactoferrin in the
reduction of
circulating cholesterol, vascular inflammation, atherosclerosis and
cardiovascular disease."
