In response to the mom who sought Evelyn Landry's help, there is a simple
solution. First, the hospital should have an accurate digital weighing
scale to do pre- and post-feeding weight checks. The scale needs to be the
kind that is accurate to 0.1 oz for a smaller baby and 0.2 oz for a larger
baby (I think it shifts at 20lb). If the hospital doesn't or if the
hospital is resistant to doing the pre and postfeeding weight checks,
Medela does rent these scales and the mother can do it herself. It is a
proven fact that this is a more accurate way of measuring intake that
pumping and bottle feeding, which WE all know but the hospital staff may
not. I learned this way back in 1986. They had to do a lot of studies to
figure out that babies are so wiggly and their weights so low, that to be
accurate you need three weight checks to reduce measurement error. The
digital scales do this automatically. Before that - there were all sorts o
attempts at trying to figure out intake - and the pumping, bottle feeding
method is considered primative by nutritionists - at least those in
maternal and child nutrition.
