A couple things come to mind:
The eraser-sized ?blister could be cultured or a smear on a slide viewed
under a microscope. If the lady has had 4 mos ongoing problems I would
suggest she see a dermatologist. Sometimes eczema becomes secondarily
infected with bacteria. Is the baby being treated and may need more than the
standard nystatin. Has the mother been on fluconazole (if in fact it is
yeast)? Also the other adjunct measures like d/c'ing or sterilizing any
artificial nipples etc should be done. Of course there is Dr. Jack's APNO
(all purpose nipple ointment) described in his book,
www.breastfeedingonline.com, and in our archives. This contains an
antifungal, antibiotic, and anti-inflammatory component.
