Dear Friends:
I saw yet another case today of a dyad having problems because the
mother was trying to manipulate her breast and baby to fit the fancy nursing
pillow. Those pillows should come with a warning, "Please place pillow AFTER baby
is comfortably latched on". Nursing pillows are truly procrustean. "[L, fr.
Gk Prokroustes Procrustes, a villainous son of Poseidon in Greek mythology who
forces travelers to fit into his bed by stretching their bodies or cutting
off their legs] : marked by arbitrary often ruthless disregard of individual
differences or special circumstances."
I got a copy of the classic Childbirth Without Fear, edited by Helen
Wessel and Harlan F. Ellis. Dr. Ellis speaks of being taught in the mid-1950s by
a physician who taught that "Tense doctor = tense patient = tense cervix =
pain". Maybe the obstetricians should be using the epidurals!
    warmly,
