I'll share my sample size of 5 weaning personalities with you.
My first was the sad product :-) of a by then still unknowing mother that
believed the dr knew what she's was doing with prescribing the first supplements
at 6 wks. She weaned more or less by herself at ab. 8 months, but restarted at
21 months, when her brother (my #2) was born. Weaned herself again in a few
weeks. She's been a shy girl, clinging to mom up to 14 years, chose to live on
her own not quite 17 and is a very self responsible and independent young adult
now at 19. She useally gets what she wants, eventually.
#2 nursed happily up to ab. 2 years, when I weaned hin from his last
night-nursies, because i climbed up the ceiling when he nursed; I was halfway my
3td pregnancy. He has trouble accepting not getting what he wants.
#3 Only nursed for comfort, had his thumb to suck on and never wanted to
co-sleep as did the others. he weaned himself at ab. 14 months, but would have
earlier if I hadn't offered him the 5 in the morning feed to have a bit more
sleep. he's a kind of a ''einzelgaenger'', does his own doings and does not need
much sibblings-activities. he does have a girl that wants him at every finger
(he's 14).
#4 hang at me like a monkey (I sometimes had the feeling that I used the sling
only to assure other people that she wouldn't fall down, but she simply wouldn't
not let go of me). She breastfed untill hir 4th birthday, when she decided that
nursing is not for Kindergarten kids. (But she wanted me to reassure her that if
she might feel the need the breast was still there...). She still is at almost
13 very unsecure, has big separation-fears and still hates it when I have to be
away for a couple of hours, even when daddy is home. But her character does have
links with that of her sister (#1), so I have good hopes that she eventually
will grow towards independance.
#5 and I mutually agreed weaning when he was 2 1/2 yo. hedidn't mind nursing
that much and waas happy to seek comfort in co-sleeping. He did keep on looking
for my bare-breasts'-skin though with his hands for about 2 years after weaning,
when I came to bed at night and he was sound asleep. He didn't do that with his
daddy.
