Hello wise people,
I have been searching to find pumping instructions or information about
mothers of prems that might suggest that mothers pump and pool their 24
hour output. Then fill containers to freeze for NICU. After an inservice at a
local hospital an NICU nurse shared that she was convinced that what a
mother ate affected the infants. She believed this because when the babies
had gassy episodes, loose and sometimes green stools she said - "every time I
asked the mothers what they had eaten they indicated gassy foods such as
cabbage, turnip etc". I suggested it might be reflecting the make up of the
expressed milk the mother had put in that container rather than what she was
eating. I got me thinking about expressed milk and increasing fat content and
times of day that mothers pump and how long between pumping sessions etc.
This NICU has no standard instructions for mothers and each nurse instructs
the mother. Years ago when I worked there I purchased a copy of the
HMBANA and left it there - but I guess it hasn't been updated.
Does anyone have any info for me or can lead me to some.
(unable to get Dr. Nancy Wight's book in Canada yet)

Thanks
Nancy Nurmi BScN, IBCLC
