I get a couple of private posts per week asking about the baby with the
cleft palate I posted about 2 months ago. So here's an update. The baby is
still exclusively human-milk fed (from a haberman feeder). She spits out
formula. Aside from several oz of formula a few weeks back when mom had a
pump failure, baby has only had human milk from the start. This makes her
very rare in my experience of babies with this condition. I was concerned
she might get a respiratory infection after the brief exposure to the
formula recently, but she just had her 2 mo. pedi check and her ears are
perfectly clear. She is off the charts for growth in height and has gained
2 lbs a month -- perfectly normal weight gain. The surgical team is moving
back her surgery date for repair of the palate from 9 months to 7 months due
to baby's excellent growth and health. It really is an inspiration to watch
how this family is dealing with this condition and working so hard to keep
this baby on exclusive breastmilk feeds. And boy is it paying off!
