Dear padre Dick (re: changing organized religion)
You asked for it- (thanks for your candor, too!) I recommend starting from
the top down.
The highest-up folks in your church (and others) could officially and
formally request a representative from breastfeeding advocacy organizations
(both LLLI and ILCA) to sit on high-level policy-forming committees. This
could be done at local national, regional, international, etc. levels - where
ever policy is made. Starting with a policy of having at least one BF
representative on policy committees will avoid haphazard and temporary
solutions. If there are church-wide policies that apply to all levels, add a
policy towards breastfeeding and babies.
Publishing positive articles (like some of the Lactnet responses) in
newsletters would also help enormously. Sending high-level church
representatives to breastfeeding conferences (especially the large
conferences) would help in "absorbing" the breastfeeding-friendly culture.
There's something about being in close proximity with hundreds of
breastfeeding moms and professionals that is bound to change attitudes.
Please e-mail me privately if there's something I can do personally.
Linda Smith, glad to see an open invitation to help change occur!
