Someone asked about whether breastfed or ABM babies are more likely to be
obese later on. Riordan and Auerbach's book talks about a study
(Kramer,1981) that attempted to control confounding factors such as the
mother's nutritional awareness. They defined breastfed as having no more
than one ABM bottle per day. In 639 young people between 12-18 years of
age, they concluded that breastfeeding provides a significant protective
effect against subsequent obesity which lasts through adolescence and rises
slightly with increased duration of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding appeared
to have a 2-4 fold benefit but had a weaker effect than genetic, racial,
socioeconomic and behavioral factors.
