Dear Friends:
LuAnn Smith is describing a study by De Carvalho, where mothers nursing
10x per 24 hours (about 14 minutes a feed) had babies who gained 560 grams at
12 days of life, whereas mothers who nursed 7 times in 24 hours (about 20
minutes per feed) had babies who gained 347 grams at 12 days. Even though the
amount of time of nursing in 24 hours was about the same, the increased
frequency made the difference.
This is in Pediatrics September 1983
, "Effects of frequent breastfeeding on early milkd production and infant
weight gain."
     Warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MSN, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI
