I must say that Kathy D.'s statement about her college students struck a
nerve with me. She said that the women in her college class were
getting a degree just in case... and that they seemed to think that "the
ideal is still to be at home with a man supporting them".

Most of my friends are in their late 20's, all college educated, most with
graduate degrees. We DO want a man to support us, BECAUSE WE
WANT TO STAY HOME WITH OUR CHILDREN!!!! (yes, I'm shouting!). The
ability to stay home with our children, as we all know, facilitates
breastfeeding (which is the norm in my circle of friends- thank
goodness!).

We have seen the 50s moms (with no choices) and the 80s moms (who
chose to do everything at once). We, the 90s moms, are trying to take a
more balanced approach.

All of us know that we can survive without a man supporting us (which
is part of the reason we have college degrees), but part of our ideal
*family* life, is a two parent household, where (for at least part of our
life) the man will work full-time so that we can nuture our children
full-time.
