I think one reason for the age gap in LC's is that it is primarily an
experienced based certification. Most people become lactation experts
through experience as a peer counselor or medical professional. Even in
the rare case when someone knows they want to be a lactation consultant
before having a child/medical degree, etc, the necessary experience
remains frustatingly out of reach. The barriers are tremendous. You
cannot be a peer counselor until you have breastfed a child. You are not
permitted to counsel mothers on breastfeeding unless you are a medical
professional. Very few people want to mentor a true beginner. By the
time you have the experience---you are no longer in your twenties.

Charity BSN, RN
(who after 10 years of study and volunteer breastfeeding counseling still
does not have enough hours to take the exam).
