Our community hospital (250-300 births per year) has a published
breastfeeding rate at discharge of 50-60% with most quitting within the first
6 weeks. Estimates of
post-6 weeks breastfeeding are around 10%. I would like to submit a proposal
for
improvement to the staff and providers to improve those rates and need some
assistance with the how-to aspect. We do not have a LC on staff and part of
the proposal will be for the hospital to provide payment for training of a
nurse (or me!) as a LC.
So, my questions:
What are your breastfeeding rates at discharge? at 2 weeks? post 6 weeks?
What do you do to keep moms from quitting? or to put it another way, to keep
them motivated to continue breastfeeding.
Is there a support program that works for you?
Are your baby docs breastfeeding-friendly? If not, how do you "educate"
them?
