Consultant for Pediatricians, Oct 2014, Vol. 13 (10) has 2 articles on breastfeeding! Breast Milk, Solid Food, and Allergy Prevention: Are They Connected? A.Bonasso, E Nease .L. Nield.
Discusses pro and cons of when to introduce solids after ponting out groups a that encourage mid first year as starting times. Discusses how important the immune factors of breastfeeding continue to be after solids introduced. Ends with one of my favorite "new" statements that "While studies determining breastfeeding's effect on allergy prevention are inconclusive, the nutritional and immunologic properties of breast milk continue to make it the ideal choice for infant nutrition, causing some to consider it a nutritional imperative rather than a lifestyle choice." [!]
For a table summarizing studies of early or late introduction of solid foods and the effect on allergy development, view this article online at PediatricsConsultant360.com.

2nd article, not as good. Breastfeeding Hypernatremic Dehydration: A Potentially Grave Threat to Breastfed Newborns. N.Reddivalia et al. Was a case report with a good discussion of why prompt follow up of newborns (AAP rec 48-72 hours after hospital discharge) is important. However they missed the biggest clue in the first sentence - this is a quiz folks - see if you get it!
"A girl was born to a 25 year old primigravida mother at 38 weeks of gestation via normal vaginal delivery with neither prenatal or perinatal complications." .

They did discuss that this happens more often with primiparas and it was a good catch by the HCP, but they don't seem to be aware of a late pretermers abilities :-( Pat in SNJ
