Much has been done on this topic by Peter Hartmann, Stephen Daly, etal at
their lab in Perth, Western Australia. I was privileged to speak with them,
see the lab, etc for more than 3 hours during my late 1993 trip down under.

To learn the bare bones, and then go from there, I recommend you see the
twin articles from this group (by Daly) which appeared in the March 1995
issue of JHL. The references listed also will be useful in helping you go
back in time to other disucssions(or their work and the work of others).

Note that the key element in developing and maintaining milk supply is the BABY!
no surprise here to most of us, but an eye-opener for persons less familiar
with the team-nature of breastfeeding.  Unlike so many things, it cannot be
accomplished nearly so easily or well when only one person is involved.
