 >I have seen a pacifier shaped device that has a small mesh bag into
which foods can be placed so that a little one can just kind of gum away at
the mesh bag and ingest tiny amounts of a new food.<

gulp. Cynthia, your suggestion of the use of this device in the situation
of the toddler being discussed seems sensible. But -- what the heck is this
product FOR? Is it intended for use with normal children? Or is for
special situations? If the former, I can hardly believe it and imagine what
the heck the consequences are....eeeek. In England we had something called
a dinky feeder, which was a tiny cup thingie, which kids kept in their
mouths non-stop -- usually filled with ribena or something -- and which led
to some gruesome sets of caries at early ages. I have to say this device
just sounds like something to enculturate children into continual 'graze'
eating -- hope you can reassure me that it is only for certain uses and not
on the shelves of shops.
