Dear Brilliant Friends,
I was asked how long from the time of birth can a newborn go without
eating. And when should I check the infants sugar levels if he is not
eating.
I have a had a very hard time finding answers though Marsha Walker's
Breastfeeding Management for the Clinician was very helpful. She writes
that "after 12 hours, the baby is dependent on glucose made from milk
components." p. 234 Obviously we would want the baby to eat in the first
hours after birth, but what if mother has had an emergency c-section and
some complications and does not come to the maternity ward until many hours
after the baby (for example). When *must* the baby eat and when *must *we
check sugar?
Thanks,
Chayn Fogelman IBCLC RN Israel
