I just want to put in my .02 on this discussion.  I have an LC in my community
to whom I will always refer women  that need more help than I as an LLLL can
give. Given her skill and knowledge I always assumed she was an IBCLC. She is
a CLC. She is also an RN.  Her  formal lactation training may not be as
extensive as that of  an IBCLC but this woman is dedicated and skilled. I have
learned so much from working with her. There are IBCLC's in this area that
have given advice that apalls me!:0 The point I'm trying to make is that yes,
professional training is important when people present themselves as LC's but
I do not determine someone's competence in BF support solely by the alphabet
soup that follows their name.
