To those of you working in hospitals, I was wondering if any of you would share your experiences regarding rooming in of all normal babies (no night nursery).

How do you handle the mothers who are C section, especially 1 day post op still using strong pain medications? We do not yet have a policy in place but have trialed it a few times and have had patients and families challenge us about it, refusing to even try it when assured that we would help them with any baby needs. These are not necessarily moms who are breastfeeding either. They don’t always have someone staying with them. When the explanations don’t seem to work, what have you found is helpful?

Thanks for any suggestions.
