From Dee Keith IBCLC, Keith X 12 @AOL.com.
Just saw Jan B's post about normal newborn weight loss.
From personal experience 10 children , I have had a number of my children at
home and some at the hospital. Obviously at home no meds, no IV, baby to
breast immediately. I can also say that normally even in hospital I refused
IV , No meds., No separation. Went home within 2 hours once. My babies varied
in weight loss. The last one weighted 9lbs.13ounces. born at home after a 3
hour labor, no meds, nursed within a few minutes after birth, lost 10 ounces
in 24 hours no further weight loss though. I was shocked, she nursed
beautifully , no excessive weight gain or fluid retention on my part. Was
back up to birth weight within 2 weeks. I had tons of milk always do. Milk
came in in 24 hours always does. This child is much smaller than my boys were
though . She is 14 months and about 25 lbs. But this is my second girl last
one was 21 years ago. That is what has to do with her being smaller than her
brothers , the fact she is female. As far as there being a problem with woman
who have a lot of children having difficulty with production. I don't think
so guys, if they can get pregnant and carry to term , then the breastfeeding
should work just fine. Start looking for more obvious causes. This sounds
like a variation of the worn out womb theory. This theory makes about as much
sense as saying that woman can only breastfed for a given number of months
before they dry up for no known reason.
