While I in no way condone the practice of giving Depo without a truly informed consent, I can see one other factor that hasn't been mentioned. Unfortunately, some men have the attitude that they "need" and "have the right to" sexual access to their wives ASAP after delivery and to them that means barely a few days, not a few weeks! This may occur more frequently in some cultures that others, but it extends into all cultures except those few that have strict taboos against sexual activity for a certain number of weeks. A woman may fear denying his demands for fear he will leave her or seek "relief" from someone else. If she has expressed this to the doc, or the doc knows this to be comon in her particular peer group, he or she may feel Depo is appropriate and may sense that the mom doesn't want it discussed with the father present. Now this is probablly a small percentage of those docs who routinely give it before mom goes hjome, but it may be the case in some situations.
