Many thanks to Esther Grunis of Tel Aviv for the following correction
in my letter. I refer everyone to Linda Smith's post of 21 Nov ("What
is Normal, What is Negative") and Diane Weissinger's now-classic "Watch
Your Language!" editorial in JHL for an explanation of the issue
regarding this approach:

Was: "Breastfeeding plays a vital role in withstanding illness. For
example: breastfed babies are less than half as likely to be
hospitalized for RSV as formula fed babies; the difference in RSV
morbidity and mortality between these two groups is actually caused by
formula feeding..."

Improved: "Formula-feeding is a major cause of infant morbidity and
mortality in the U.S. For example: formula-fed babies are more than
twice as likely to be hospitalized for RSV as breastfed babies; the
difference in illness and death between these two groups is actually
caused by formula feeding..."

Onward and upward!
