That is, exactly, what I want to know.

When I first saw this mom, I was last in a long line of breastfeeding
professionals that she had seen. Everyone, I kid you not, had said, "this
will clear up in X weeks." The reasons for the pain varied from , "it's
because you're fair-skinned," to "this is a normal part of learning to
breastfeed." When she came to me, she was desperate for assistance.

I took a look, saw the little dip in the tongue and wrote down "shortened
frenulum," on a handout, made some notes, gave her some info on the
vasospasm that I had noted as well, and told her that the shortened frenulum
was beyond my scope, but here was an IBCLC who was also a doctor, who would
determine if the frenulum was indeed short, and would possibly suggest
clipping it.

We talked about the procedure, I suggestions of how to deal with the
vasospasm, discussed the latch, her mom, her husband, the baby shower, and
everything else that was relevant. (BTW, her mom breastfed her for two
years, so she's not the first in a generation or two to breastfeed.) So, off
she went to the Dr. IBCLC.

When I got the email, as forwarded here, that said EIGHT TYLENOLS to deal
with the pain, I nearly fell over. THIS was the solution to a frenulum she
agreed was short?!

So, I have the mom booked in with a dental specialist on Tuesday. This mom
will have dedicated nine weeks to breastfeeding pain by the time of the
appointment. At this point, she's in constant contact with me because I have
been the only one to actually treat her pain as if it's real; and I'm
feeling frustrated because the next person in the chain of command told this
mom to take EIGHT Tylenol to deal with breastfeeding pain. (As one astute
email said, "Liver damage is preferable to solving a breastfeeding
problem?")

As of today, the mom has switched to a bottle of formula. The pain is
unbearable. She's going to try some formula while her nipples get a chance
to heal. <wail> After the dental appointment, I hope that we'll have at
least one more step to take. At this point, we have to deal with a
breastfeeding problem AND weaning from the bottle to breast.
