What are you washing these babies in that they are suddenly sterile? It strikes me that the baby wash you're rinsing them with is hardly up to infection control standards - though I'm just fine with staff wearing gloves so they don't smear the baby with their dirty hospital hands :).

Shaking my head at the idea that anything would keep a new mother from kissing her sweet baby....
