Mom still has the lump in her breast. I had advised her to use warm salt water compresses before feeding and she found that pus started leaking through her skin. She saw the OB today and he used a cotton swab to enlarge the hole from which pus is leaking and told her to keep up the compresses and keep squeezing out the pus. He told her that the abscess is too big to use needle aspiration but isn't recommending any kind of surgical drainage. This is the second OB the mom has seen. The first was the one who prescribed penicillin.

I am very concerned. I have never heard of a physician using a cotton swab to enlarge a hole in a breast abscess and advising to continue with just compresses and squeezing out pus. Any advice?

On another subject, I had described to this mom the technique of leaning over baby to feed to help release the plug in her breast. She tried this technique to feed baby with her healthy breast and he got much more milk than usual (baby is TT and LT and has difficulty transferring milk) Has anyone ever heard of this technique helping with milk transfer with a baby who is having difficulty breastfeeding well?
