Hi Lynn :)
I can almost hear the shock and dismay in your voice! Here we are
talking on Lactnet about the normality of breastfeeding, and you are
being confronted by diametrically opposed opinions. These ideas sound
old-fashioned, to put it mildly, and would astound most of us.

I think that the best anyone can do is to help these women find ways to
nurse without violating their norms. Our expertise and range of practice is
limited to breastfeeding management.

I don't believe that it is our job to tell other people how to live their lives
unless someone is being harmed. We may not agree with their beliefs,
but it is part of their culture. I certainly would not want THEM to try and
persuade me to live as they do! Our mandate does not include criticizing
or attempting to alter belief systems.
