Not only is it illegal is it really effective??? When I was LC at an inner
city Chicago hospital, this was a common situation. Didn't want them to get
pregnant too soon so they got Depo prior to discharge. HOWEVER, one must consider
that Depo only lasts three months (actually 2 months, 10 weeks is the optimal
time to get your "renewal dose") and then it is NOT effective unless they
continue to get the shots regularly. Many of those patients were back in one year
with another pregnancy conceived within that third postpartum month. Very
rarely was any education given to these patients containing this information. I
made a point of explaining it, not sure it had much effect but at least it got
the nurses and doctors thinking about it. The package insert states that the
optimal time of administation is 4-6 weeks postpartum.
