Dear Lactnetters

When a mother with candidiasis is pumping for a preterm infant in the
nicu, is it safe for her to freeze and feed the milk she is pumping
during the outbreak? Riordan says freezing deactivates the yeast, but
does not kill it. Clay and Hoover claim milk expressed during a yeast
infection could possibly be a source of reinfection. Newman, on the
other hand, says discarding the milk seems like a waste since the
antifungal factors in breastmilk will most likely remain in the form
that did not cause the problem. Does anybody have a nicu protocol that
addresses use and storage of expressed breast milk during these
circumstances? Any advice and information would be greatly
appreciated.

Sincerely,
Marianne Jawanda, IBCLC
