 Dear Colleagues,
I want to think everyone who posted and mailed me privately about my client whose 8 week old was not latching. The tongue-tie had been clipped, but baby was not organizing to feed, would not latch onto a nipple shield, would only chew on the breast and took over an hour to feed on a bottle. Mom was very upset and her supply was very low. We had a consult from another chiropractor who found that the stress in the occiput originated in the rib area and the trapezius muscle. After working on those areas and with further work on the jaw and cranial bones, the baby has been feeding much better. I also gave mom Bach Flower remedies and she has taken them for the past 10 days with great emotional improvement. Baby now takes a bottle in about 45 minutes (mom uses paced feeding) and will feed at breast with the lactaid and nipple shield, clearly transferring milk. He is also very adamant about comforting at breast and loves to be there, although eh still chews and hurts her w/o the shield. Mom's supply is rising significantly. We did not change the bottle, b/c he actually does better with the Natural Latch than the Haberman now. We did have some concern about tracheomalasia, but his breathing is much improved with the increase in breastmilk (vs AIM) and the ability to feed less defensively. Baby has a heart murmur--saw cardio yesterday--all is fine. There is still a residual posterior tongue-tie on the right side, which is causing him to unevenly elevate his tongue and restricts his ability to cup the breast, as well as causing the chiropractic adjustments not to hold (as he needs to compensate to feed), so he will be reclipped by Dr. Coryllos as soon as mom is back in the US. This lovely mom is so delighted to be going home to visit her family feeding her baby at breast that her entire being is glowing! I truly thank you all for you support, as always!!

My original post:
I have permission to post. I have a client whose baby is now 8 weeks.
Baby had a posterior tongue-tie that was clipped a week ago. Mom has a
low milk supply--has since the beginning. While this would normally
have an impact on baby's willingness to be at breast, I am not sure it
is as significant in this case. The baby takes 1-1.25 hours to take 4
oz from a bottle. He simply does a little chewing motion on the end of
the nipple. She is currently using the NaturalLatch. With such long
feedings, mom is exhausted and baby takes very short naps--mom has
little time to pump and is only managing 6X per day--2 oz per pumping.
(She found no improvement with the Medela Classic--is using domperidone
and herbs). Mom does not use a pacifier, but I have instructed her to
use one as a tug-o-war device to encourage him to learn to hold onto
the nipple. When he goes to breast, which he is still quite eager to do
most of the time, he licks a lot and has a very difficult time
organizing. He does not organize on a finger either. Baby is currently receiving
CST and has extreme tension in his occiput and has a very strong
preference for turning his head to the right. I
am considering suggesting she get a neuro referral, but am hoping
someone here has another idea, including whether we should try a
different bottle. I know bottles have been discussed a lot, but what
this baby does makes me very unclear as to which might be helpful. I am
thinking maybe a Haberman.? BTW, mom has had the very best success with
latch with baby in the tub. Mom is very stressed, very emotional about
the situation, but is so devoted to her baby and really wants to feed
him at breast, but has given herself a deadline of the end of the month
as she will be going abroad then.
