Patricia,

I just had a patient who started Nifedipine for postpartum high
blood pressure. She is also taking one dose per day. She is pumping
breastmilk for her preemie (32 weeks) in the NICU and the neonatologists
have OK'd it for the baby. As with lots of meds, I simply advised her to
take the med after pumping and wait about 3 hours before pumping to decrease
the amount of drug in the breastmilk.

According to Hale, Nifedipine is approved by the AAP for use in
breastfeeding mothers. The studies quoted conclude that the amount ingested
via breastmilk poses little risk to an infant.
