The oral dosage regimen which gives the same protection from late hemorrhagic disease as IM prophylaxis at birth, consists of 1 mg the first day, then either 1 mg each week for three months, or 25 micrograms daily for three months.  One more thing for the postpartum mother to remember.
The jury is still out on childhood cancer and IM Vit.K.  For babies experiencing traumatic births (ventouse, forceps, malpresentations) the oral route will not get their levels up fast enough to protect from traumatic hemorrhage following the birth.  Other babies should get a choice, IMO.
