Hi all,
I would really appreciate some advice re a mother (she has asked me to
contact other LCs for advice) who has a 6 mo baby. The mother has been
pumping and has exclusively fed her baby EBM since birth, by choice. Baby is
thriving. The mother has been experiencing deep breast pain around her outer
rim of her areola (about where the breast assembly is placed on her breast)
when pumping. She uses a Pump in Style, with the 2 phases.
This pain began about 1 mo ago. The pain is present all the time to some
degree but worsens when she pumps. The first phase of pumping (the 2 mins to
induce MER) increases the pain somewhat but the slower regular pumping after
letdown causes more significant pain which lasts for about 5 mins and then
it subsides a bit. She has the pump suction on three notches from maximum
strength. Her nipples are intact and the breast assembly is not tight (the
nipple moves freely when she pumps). The areola looks normal. She
experiences pain when she hugs her partner, cuddles her baby, buckling on
her seat belt, even the touch of water in the shower hurts her. She doesn't
sleep prone, she has had no injury, no breast surgery, she is on no
medications. She did start her periods again in early June and has had 3
periods since then (i.e. irregular).
Any thoughts or advice? Thank you.
