Hi Virginia
For as long as there have been bottles (and well before) people have used
them to feed all manner of woefully inappropriate fluids to babies.
Although it was rare to come across a mother who was not breastfeeding her
baby, I saw and heard of very young infants in Burma being fed coffee
creamer, dilute sweetened cow milk powder, mashed (or prechewed) rice ...
often from (impossible to clean) bottles ... mothers said that they used
these things for all the same reasons women here use formula ... to make
babies sleep ... because they don't have enough milk (especially in the
evenings) ... because they must be separated from their infants in order to
support the rest of the family ... because western women use powdered milk
... because grandma said so ... if they had the purchasing power it would
have been commercial formula ... and it would have been just as deadly.
So ask me why I believe in the Code ...
