While I agree to a point with Suzanne's Post - I also have to add that Dad
of baby who pedi didn't want to clip suffered years of speech impediments
and therapy, braces and other issues because no one would clip his. There
were several other members of his family who suffered the same things, those
who were clipped didn't have the problems that those who were not did.

While it does occur in degrees, it is difficult to predict which ones will
later have problems - many babies nurse well and gain weight well while
tongue tied, but mother is wincing severely each time that baby is put to
the breast. That makes continued breastfeeding unpleasant and less likely to
be maintained.

Many providers are *very* unwilling to clip a tight frenulum, but waiting
invokes higher costs, increased pain and does not optimize nursing duration.
It isn't something they are comfortable doing. If a provider does not want
to clip, and the parents want the baby clipped then there should be a
referral made to someone who *IS* willing (ne. comfortable) to clip if he or
she assesses the situation to be a potential issue. It's really no different
than referring a patient to the dentist for a dental problem because that is
not something most doctors or practitioners are comfortable in managing.

Just my 2 cents
Michelle
