I just read the book ( If in fact you are referring to "Into the Forrest by
Jean Hagland).  The sister suckled the infant after the birth, when the
birth mother became very ill with infection.  They lived out in the boonies
during a world crisis, no power, travel, outside contact.  The sister's milk
supply came in and kept the baby alive until the mother was recovered.
Interesting.
