My sweet little granddaughter, born 4 months, was born with a
tongue-tie. Definitely heart-shaped. But she could pull her tongue
forward and latch onto the breast. My daughter states that breastfeeding
is comfortable. But several other things disturb me. She has been
nasally congested since birth - somedays worse than others. She cannot
maintain a sustained feeding. Pulls off constantly. And , no matter what
bottle I use, she screams and chokes. (I babysit on Sundays every 2
weeks.) I even tried spoon-feeding, using a breastbottle, cup and
syringe. She chokes and screams. My daughter states that she does that
with nursing in the evening also.
Now, I have had several thoughts, 1- she can't maintain the forward
tongue and that is why she doesn't nurse long. It tires her out. 2- that
she cannot lift her tongue to aid in swallowing and that is why she is
choking 3- that the tongue has nothing to do with the problems and she
has allergies already (severe nasal congestion) or a neurological
deficit that causes the choking.

I need to tell you all that my daughter is a pediatrician and would not
hear of clipping the forward frenulum. (she might have considered it if
the baby had caused her soreness or if she hadn't gained weight).

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts from you wise women of Lactnet.
I don't know if my daughter would take my advice, but I worry so about
my sweet little grandchild. She seems so unhappy.
