I can't believe I missed it. Did any fellow Atlantans attend?

We'll look back in 30 years and see this study as a turning point in how
vitamin D supplementation is handled.

Best,
Katherine

Subject: Reminder - Presentation: Randomized Clinical Trials for High-Dose
Vitamin D Supplementation during Pregnancy: Safety and Outcomes

The Maternal and Infant Health Branch, Division of Reproductive Health,
National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion
Presents.....

"Randomized Clinical Trials for High-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation during
Pregnancy: Safety and Outcomes"

Bruce W. Hollis, Ph.D.

When: Wednesday, March 31, 2010
9:30 - 11:00 am
Location: Columbia Building, rooms 1064-1065
An internationally-recognized expert in vitamin D research, Dr. Hollis will
provide an overview of vitamin D physiology and health issues and will share
results from two randomized control trials of vitamin D supplementation
during pregnancy. In both trials, vitamin D sufficiency was strongly
associated with decreased risks for preterm birth, for infection during
pregnancy and for other comorbidities, with the greatest effect obtained
with a 4000 IU vitamin D/day regimen. No adverse events were associated with
vitamin D supplementation.
Dr. Hollis received his undergraduate degree from the Ohio State University
and Ph.D. from the University of Guelph (Canada). He did a fellowship in
endocrinology at Case Western Reserve University from 1979-82 when he joined
the faculty until 1986. In 1986, he moved to the Medical University of South
Carolina where he is currently Professor of Pediatrics, Biochemistry and
Molecular Biology, as well as, Director of Pediatric Nutritional Sciences.
Dr. Hollis has been a NIH-funded investigator for the past 30 years and has
published over 200 peer-reviewed articles. His current NIH funding is in
regard to the vitamin D requirements during pregnancy and lactation.
